updated traditional living room

Gina & Steve were so fun to work with!  As usual, our inspirational homeowner's were incredibly cool and it was a thrill for Gina, Steve and myself to meet them.
Hope you guys liked the way the room turned out.  Steve & Gina were genuinely thrilled, gracious and kind.  One of the first things they said to me when I arrived was how "Thy never used their living room."  Even when guests came over, everyone including the kids, was watching TV in the family room.  The living room had more space and a larger TV!  So, it was all about designing the room to fit their style, tastes and the way they REALLY wanted to used that space.  The large TV wound up in the family room and a newer, smaller one was installed in the modified that was on a swivel/extendable arm.  Now it's a room they can lounge in, read a book or even have a drink or romantic dinner by the fire.  Gina & Steve, I hope you guys love your room and home for years to come.  It was my pleasure and honor to be with you and help you get to where you wanted to go.  SO MUCH thanks to the oh-so talented Jared, my behind the scenes head carpenter Danny who always delivers ten fold, Rupert who quietly goes about his business impressing all of us and to Ruth & Jenn who made this episode happen with their energy, sense of fun and treat-lovin' ways!  YOU GUYS ROCK!

Above are some behind the scene photos (My beloved design producer, Ruth, taking a much needed quick nap, our awesome homeowner's Steve & Gina, the "after" of our room & the super-groovy Jared taking some pics)

Loved the wall treatment using the chair-rail to bring the eye down lower. My living room has a VERY high slanted cedar plank ceiling as well. I think this may work for me! YES...finally a GREAT idea!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I love what you did with the fireplace. We have a similar painted brick fireplace and we are wondering the steps to update it similar to this room's new look.
Can you post instructions? I know there was cement board, but was it attached directly to the brick?.....

Hi Nancy and thank you for watching the show! Yes, the cement board was attached to the brick and within the next few weeks there will be step by step instructions of all major RMS projects (like this fireplace) on the HGTV web site. Hope that will help and I will keep you posted. We are getting the tips and instructions ready as I write this.
-Have a great week, Angelo

First time watching show...loved it! New favorite.
We just bought a home with straight cedar planks on 8 ft ceilings, a chair rail, and painted paneling on the walls
Would the same colors work in our room as well? I.e-Paint the bottom the darker color and the rest of the room the lighter color? What about the ceiling, did you paint it the same color as the planks?
Thanks so much !! Oh, and did you just add crown molding around the bookcase? It looked great!

I just started watching the show and I am already hooked on it. I love the idea of creating a room from the inspiring ideas. Where can I get the chairs that were in front of the fireplace?

HI Cimmie,
Thanks for watching the show and I hope you continue enjoy it. The chairs were bought at URBAN HOME is Sherman Oaks, CA on VENTURA BLVD.
They have a few stores in Southern California.
