small spaces...

Organization is key!  Above: Clean, simple, crisp color and open shelving create the illusion of a loft-like feel.  Keeping everything organized and neat help small spaces feel larger and airy.  A few pops of color and texture make a mostly all white room get a bit of character.  Shiny surfaces (stainless appliances) can help bounce light and add to the illusion of a larger room.

Don't be afraid to play with color and paint treatments, even in a small room.  In this case, the stripes add a sense of "stretching" out the room and the floor to ceiling jewel-like curtains, make a small room look and feel grand.  Treat a smaller space like it's a dance hall--create a large dramatic statement, but unlike a large room, keep it to 1 or 2 so your room doesn't start to feel overwhelmed.

I have always lived in square footage challenged apartments and homes.  Early on it was because of circumstances and later in life I realized that I actually liked living in a home that felt manageable to me.

Every home has it's own design challenges and in small spaces you do not have to sacrifice style due to the lack of space--you just have to think about it differently.

Once again, adding a great bit of color, like the great yellow on the bed, can give your small room a fantastic spacious feel.  The details don't hurt either--stuff like the black trim on the white curtains, the chandelier, the great chair and pillow near the foot of the bed as well as the dressers, lamps and art work give this master grand style without feeling cluttered.

OH, I love these rooms. I too have always lived in small homes and apartments. I used to HATE IT! Then, after doing well in my career and making some money I upsized. BIG TIME. I bought what I thought was my dream home. Appox. 3,000 s/f and I was deliriously happy. After years of living in it and enjoying my life there, I started to miss my NYC apartments. I sold the upsate farm house last year and I am back to about half the s/f. I am in love with my home, my space, my life!

Angelo, I watch your shows religiously and I am a fan of not only your style, but you! Your enthusiasm for all you do just radiates from the tube. You are a find. I hope wherever the Holidays take you, it's somewhere wonderfully enjoyable.

This is a subject so close to my heart. I too have lived in small spaces my whole life and still do. I have had a love-hate relationship with them, mostly because I have no idea what to do when it comes to decorating them. I know that you can make small spaces feel bigger as well as be cozy and well styled. I think my problem is clutter. I have too much stuff. I keep thinking if only I had more room I;d be OK. I think if I had more room I would just fill it up as well.

I have always had a fondness for small homes. They feel "just right" for me.

I have downsized after many years in living in a home that didn't get lived in as much due to the fact I had more space than I really needed. I have never been happier in a space now that I am really living in every room.

If only I knew how to make my rooms look like that. I am probably like Keiley. I need to get rid of some "stuff."

Every time I turn around there is something about how to make a small space seem bigger...which is really informative and nice... I though have a different dilema...I have a room that has 30 foot high ceilings (open to a loft) and floor to ceiling windows....I just dont know where to begin...do you have any suggestions? or do you have some websites you could refer me to? thank you, and happy holidays!
