house beautiful mag is NOT a fan...

Good Times!

When you work in a service industry, like mine, your number 1 priority is to make your client/customer happy.  Every once in a while you get recognized by the media, especially when you're doing it on a national platform.  Well, in the new issue of House Beautiful magazine, a beautiful publication that I subscribe to and like (Ina Garten is a contributor and I think she rocks!) thinks my old show "24 Hour Design" which is no longer in production and in re-runs for about a year, is not so stellar!

Good Times indeed.

Yes, House Beautiful photographs gorgeous rooms (check out the cover, stunning!) and has an overall beautiful publication.  I will still continue to subscribe and no hard feelings here.  They have EVERY RIGHT to not like what I do.

It was never the way I dreamt of being in a design mag., but life is always full of surprises and I say, "Bring it on!"

I and the rest of my hard working "24 Hour Design" crew are very proud of what we were able to accomplish in 1 very long day and with a limited budget.  We made plenty of homeowner's happy and after 4 glorious seasons, were a bit sad to call it quits but were thrilled to move onto "Rate My Space."

House Beautiful, thank you for the mention.
You all have a truly beautiful magazine and if you see Ina, tell her I think she is amazing.

They just don't get it. You're right, they are a beautiful publication but there's a huge difference between styling a photo shoot and the nuts and bolts of a tv design show that has time and budget constraints. Oh well, you know what they say, all press is good press. Go forth and continue to inspire.

Oh my goodness, you are SO classy! Seriously, I need to take notes from you...as I have already proven, I can be a true "bull in a china shop." I think they really need to take a pill.

I love Ina, too. She's so laid back on her show and that makes me feel like I could make some of the things she does. My brisket, on the other hand, tells a different and kinda tough side of the story. She is one who motivates me to keep trying, though.

The reason I stopped by was to compliment you on the YouTube vid for the Sierra Club. Can you be any more wonderful? I mean what's out here in life that you can't do!

Please continue to inspire and amaze...

AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I LOVED "24 Hour Design!" I love your new show, but really miss "24." I thought you guys did an amazing job giving each homeowner something wonderful and specific to them. They don't get it. I can only imagine the challenges in doing that show and you guys pulled it of beautifully.

you have GOT to be kidding me... first of all WHY are they reviewing a show that is old? Why not review your new show? I think I saw a few other shows on the list that are old as well... oh well - you know what they say about critics... I'd like to see them put a shoot together in one day - design, build, etc. LOL they do not get it... I'm an avid fan of DIY TV and I get it... and of all the shows on TV - new and old, your shows hit the spot every time... even if I don't like the "style" I can appreciate the design. I also get that you design for individual homeowners - for their taste... something a magazine does not do... boy this erks me - I don't know how you brush it off - seriously??? I'd be marching down to their offices or pick up the phone to yell at someone - hahaha... thank you for being you... makes me want to be a better me!

What? I get HB and I didn't even see that article. I just opened it back up and read it. I am going to be polite and not say what I really feel about some of the positive comments they made about other shows, but I will say that they got it WAAAAAY wrong when it comes to "24 Hour Design." Drew is correct. They just don't get it.

I too love Ina and think she is a class act and just wonderful to watch. Seeing you cook in your kitchen on the HGTV Christmas special actually reminded me of her show. You guys should do a special.

You inspire,
Julie

HUH? I don't understand. Did they see the same show we all watched? Did they only watch 1 episode?

The show had great design advice. Upbeat personality and great results on a time crunch and budget not to mention thrilled homeowners. Your fans, this one included, are scratching their heads. I think many design mags are a bit out of touch with the rest of the country.

JKL said...

This proves my point from a long time ago, most decor magazines are completely out of touch with the rest of the country. They have gorgeous pictures that are painfully styled and can act as inspirational but when all is said and done they talk down to the general reader. Your shows, all of them, from Clean Sweep to 24 Hour Design and now Rate My Space speak to us not down to us. I had stopped subscribing to most design mags years ago. There are some good ones out there and even some great books but not enough. Maybe you can think about doing your own. Anyway, I think they got it wrong. I hope you didn't take it personally. It sounds like you didn't. We are continued to be inspired by your style. Rate My Space is wonderful.

I guess it could have been worse.

Why did they not review your new show? That's a little odd. I do agree with jkl, most design mags are completely out of touch with the general public. I agree that most are just eye candy for most of us, but how much eye candy can you deal with especially in this economy.

DEAN said...

Well, you win some, you lose some. Could of been worse. At least they spelled your name right. Don't worry, they'll be closing their doors with the next year or two. Magazines like that are a dying breed and speak to a very slim margin.

Well, they need to get with the times....don't they? I'll agree, I love Ina and her style! ~ Robyn

Ina does ROCK! I am a huge fan of hers and yours. Look at it this way, you were mentioned in a mag that features her. One step closer to getting to getting to meet her. You guys SHOULD do something together. her food (YUM) your style (WOW) and both your charming personalities, I'm there!!!!

They're wrong and INA is awesome.

Go forth and CONTINUE to design well & inspire.
Maybe your future consists of some homemade Ina scones and coffee. Stay humble.

Nothing like a dusty old publication commenting on something they don't understand, TV production. If they only knew what went into putting these cheap/budget decor shows together, they'd have a different perspective. I think criticism is necessary but few are qualified to do so wether it is for book, theater, art, film or television.

I actually receive HB and I saw the whole article and just chuckled out loud. They got it all a bit wrong. I work in TV production and have actually worked on a couple of home improvement shows. I am not using my real name here, you auditioned for one of my shows years ago and turned us down! LOL! I have followed your career and think you are doing a marvelous job.

Ina Garten is spectacular and I think you have excellent taste.

Cheers,
"Ted"

Too bad they don't get it...oh well as they say opinion are like a..holes everyone has one and I guess in your industry there is cut throat like everywhere else in the world. I say do what you keep doing and forget about it...it's a shame but WE know better;) French;) xoxo

Angelo...you have the best attitude ever. Hopefully House Beautiful will write a blurp on RMS, because you have more than proven yourself! As long as your clients are happy, who cares.

Sandra said...

Keep on keeping' on! Time weary publication, odd point of view. Clearly never saw more than 1 episode and not familiar with your whole body of work.

Dee said...

"Bring it On!" indeed. Way off the mark and Sandra's right, they haven't got a clue about the you or the show. They haven't got a clue about anything other than their narrow point of view on "design."

I miss new episodes of "24..." and also "Clean Sweep," Your new show is great, the older ones had wonderful budget and time ideas. Hope there's more of both in your future.

Jim & Sandra said...

Waaaaay of base. Trust me, they didn't watch more than one episode.

Angelo,

OK, the author of this was obviously smoking crack. Your personality shines!! Your bald head is sexy as hell and I love that you dress casually, shows that you are not afraid to be yourself (you are so bloody amazing).

It shows how wonderful that you are by posting this jab on your blog. BUT-- look at your following! EVERYONE loves Angelo. PLEASE keep doing what you are doing-- we ALL know it works and works oh so very well.

You rock!

Angelo, don't let the media discourage you. Any recognition is good recognition, especially a critic's review. Keep in mind that for every negative review, you will likely get more than double the people checking out your work just to see what the fuss is all about. I think your work is spectacular. Your passion is so evident and your personality makes it a joy to watch. Keep up the good work.

Oh HB!

I saw that article when I received m copy this month. I use the word article loosely. It was filler. A missed opportunity to actually interview the desgners, production companies and real viewers that benefit from shows like that. Great design is about a mix, I think your new show best exemplifies that. 24 was a great way to inspire people and get the creative juices going.

Like most mags, I was going to let this subscription run out. There is less and less need for them, now I have another reason beyond economics.

Totally out of touch.

You and your talent are incredible.

Sharon said...

Maybe it was an attempt at "humor." Maybe? I don't know. The whole section was bad. I love Ina Garten as well and they have lovely pictures sometimes, but nothing that is a "must read." It could have been a cool article if they did it right.

JuJu said...

Oh those silly decor mag editors. At least it's a mention. Would have been better if they knew of what they spoke. Hip, hip hooray for bad press!

Peter said...

You gotta love the press. Even when they write about what "they know," they get it wrong.

Marcia said...

I love your take on it. Quite graceful. Ina Garten DOES rock! You guys should "rock" it together on something.

STEVE said...

HA! Funny actually for those of us that know what you do and know the show. Amazing transformations for uber thankful homeowners. Love your attitude. YOU rock just as hard as Ina.

Sarah said...

Hey, they should have used a pic of you where you could see your face!

Sean said...

YOU ROCK! I can't say it enough.

Becky said...

I love HB, but I love you more! You are an amazing designer and I especially love RMS. (And the blog!)

Lynda said...

I agree with Becky. HB is great and I buy it from time to time, but you are AMAZING! I love RMS and I thought you did an incredible job on 24HD. Love to watch you.

terri said...

The article is barely one at all. It seems so thrown together and misses the mark on almost all those shows, including yours. Why would they not review new shows like "Rate My Space" instead of ones that are in repeats? That's like reviewing the Cosby show today. They should have done a real article on this subject since TV Design shows are what we all watch! Magazines are not that influential.

Well, your attitude about this matches your style-perfect! I think you are one of the best out there and I agree, Ina Garten ROCKS. You have great taste.

mrsben said...

Spoken like a true Gentleman and Professional that you are.

Phyllis said...

Ha. Ha. Did they ever get it wrong. The other posters are right, they must not have watched more than one episode. This was such a great show with a wealth of creative ideas that were not only budget friendly but time sensitive. You are incredible and your new show proves that you are comfortable and beyond talented in any design style and within any budget. Clean Sweep & 24HD showed what you could do with little time and money and now, you're blowing us away with a slightly bigger budget. Isn't success the best!

KYLE said...

They are clueless.

Lisa said...

What show were they watching? 24 Hour Design is a wonderful show and you all do an amazing job. I wish there were new episodes!

TIFF said...

They're kidding, right? Oh HB! Stick to what you know-overpriced, over styled design that is belabored over. If you haven't seen Rate My Space, you're missing the mark and "24" was exactly what it needed to be: Wuick, smart, creative & waaaay cheap ideas for the rest of and no, I do not live in a trailer park but my Mom does and it's lovely. You wouldn't know it once you're inside. "LOL!" I actually LIVES IN THE BIG CITY!

Get over it HB and come down and "meet the people."

Letty said...

I don't get this magazine, so no boycott from me... but I'm not rushing out to get them now! I think this was really rude on their part - why on earth would you write an article like this? I found your blog through your myspace page (very nice btw). I love 24 Hour Design, Rate Your Space and Clean Sweep and YOU!

Alkemie said...

Dear Angelo,

I'm very glad that you decided to start a blog. I watch many shows on HGTV and subscribe to a great number of design magazines. To be honest, I didn't become a total fan of yours until you started doing the show "Rate My Space." I'd seen a some episodes of 24 hour design here and there but quite honestly, had not been completely sold on it. Somewhere between that show and Rate My Space - your design aesthetics changed and seemed to reach a whole new level. I now diligently record all of your Rate My Space shows. I think the resulting rooms and mixes are absolutely brilliant. I'm definitely not one who has any credentials to judge by any means but the reason for the above was that I didn't like all of the resulting rooms from 24 hour design while the resulting rooms from the show "Rate My Space" have been absolutely hits every time in my eyes.

You have incredible talent and I look forward to seeing many more shows with you as the designer.

Sincerely,

Karen Olivia
