more from high point...

One of the best things about any line of work, is getting to see how others do what you do.
When I was younger and still figuring stuff out, I worked at Starbucks. This was quite awhile back. To give you and idea, I worked at one of the only two Starbucks in all of Los Angeles & the company hadn't gone public yet.  We're talking Ye Olden Days.  Yester Year.

While I was at said, Starbucks, I vowed to make the best espresso drink in the history of coffee (insert clenched fists waving towards the heavens).  I would go to other gourmet espresso bars and marvel at the shots being pulled & the crema.  Depending on the type of beans (sometimes region, cost, quality), grind, machine & barista...espresso shots would taste differently.  Even when I knew I may be limited by what I was working with and my barista "talents" I still loved marveling at others who did the same thing I did, but differently.

Being at High Point was a little like that.  There were so many beautiful collections,  vendors and artisans.  Many familiar names & faces are bringing their wares to the marketplace....and one on the verge of you knowing who he is:

ROBERT PETRIL JR. has been in the furniture business for years.  It's in his blood.  Literally. His Dad was in the business and Robert is finding his own path.
He lives in China with his beautiful wife & kids and has worked behind the scenes for many recognizable names in the furniture business as a designer.
Well, it's time for him to start making a name for himself and bring his keen eye and sense of style to the world.  You can read more about him and all he does on his blog:

CANDICE OLSON is HGTV's favorite designer with her big budget makeovers, amazing talent, gorgeous rooms and one of the best design shows out there, DIVINE DESIGN.
Her new collection with Norwalk Furniture is as classic and glamorous as she is.  Check it out.

TY PENNINGTON and I used to work on the same network: TLC
He was doing Trading Spaces and I was on Clean Sweep.  Ty was already a star and I was a mere background player.  We never met.  He went on to even bigger stardom on ABC and all around the world.  His new line is with HOWARD MILLER.
The Look: Traditional, Classic, Good Looking.

PAULA DEEN, who doesn't love her?  Seriously.  I eat the way she cooks!  I know, save the healthy talk.  I try to squeeze in a salad & an apple now and then.  Well, Paula is going beyond the kitchen, though she's still at the FOOD NETWORK doing her thang y'all, with her new line of furniture from UNIVERSAL.
The Look: Warm, Inviting & Beautiful Lines.

THOMAS O'BRIEN is, if you didn't know this already from previous posts, my design geek moment.  There are waaaay to many designers/decorators/architects to mention whom I appreciate and admire their work.  Thomas O'Brien is the only one, for me, that always gets it right.  As far as I'm concerned, the man has never had a design misstep.  At least not from what I can tell.  I am not going to bore you with my reasons as to why I am a fan, other than to say that he gets who he is and his style & designs are always true to that.  His studio/store AERO is just pure beauty.  I highly recommend you visit the web site.  Look around at all the amazing images.  Every details is perfection.  His collection at TARGET is fantastic.

He was at High Point.  I did not attend his event.  Sometimes, you just want the image of those you admire to be just that...an image that has no basis in reality.  Mr. O'Brien, I'd gladly buy you an espresso on the same day I purchase a scone for Ms. Kate Winslet.

This post one of the main reason I love you. It speaks to who you are. You're writing about others.

I agree with you about Thomas O'Brien. I have been to his store, I have seen photos in glossy mags of his homes and his work and I have purchased his sheets at Target. The only thing of his I could afford. Oh, I bought a couple of his throw pillows as well. From Target. I am now waiting for one of your sofas and your chairs to be available this summer. I will toss Thomas O'Brien's pillows on them. It will be perfect.

P.S. Is that your sofa in the header pic? Gorgeous.

I love it all. The Thomas O'Brien rug is awesome. And the sofa by Robert Petril...wow. Paula Deen's kitchen cupboard, oh my.

Pure eye candy here and you've done a wonderful job allowing me to live High Point vicariously through your eyes. Thank you for that.

Oh how I'd love to meet Candice & Paula (& you of course). You immediately feel like you'd get a hug or a huge smile. When I read your intro on FB, I laughed as I too worked as a Starbucks Partner. I always wanted to pull that killer shot...ha! The other funny was as I was readingm I had my lap top in lap, & my feet resting on that exact T. O'Brien bench thru Target. Love your blog, as you reach out to everyone ♥

Pretty cool stuff. Thomas O'Brien rocks it hard & so do you! Is that one of your pieces in the header? I've seen glimpses of that fabric in the past. Well done Mr. Surmelis. This was an excellent entry. You are a very gracious man.

I have been an admirer of yours and your work from afar for many years. Even when you have been limited by budgets & TV restrictions you come out on the other side with your client's needs met and your dignity in place. You are a true gentleman, a talented individual and one hot guy! I had to get that in. I have been dying to say it for years.

Thank you so much for the birthday wishes. To kick off the celebration, my friends gave me a 'dessert dinner.' The menu was my favorite homemade treats: (baked!) cheesecake, Red Velvet cake, brownies, ice-cream, peanut brittle, chocolate chip/pecan cookies and coconut cake. "MIchelle Obama" arms be darned - it was delectable!

Great "shout outs." You are a gentleman and a creative force of your own to be dealt with. I LOVE Thomas O'Brien's work. I've seen a few of his homes featured in Decor mags and they are drool worthy. I can see why you relate to his style. It's just timeless perfection.
